Seoul Art Space Geumcheon. Opening December 9, 10AM – 6PM
The exhibition has a characteristic of presenting the outcome of four
different nationality artists who are recommended and selected through
the International Residency Exchange Program and International Artist
in Residency Program public contribution of Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon.
Each artist covers varies genres from photography, sculpture,
electronic music and video, wooden architect and performance, and
installation, but also focuses on basic and fantastic use or ambiguity
and unstable attribute of object.
Saskia Janssen paid attention to the context which is found in two
distinctive situations. For a while, she has seen a circus member who
spends all of their daily wages to buy drugs. Through reinterpreted
installation of ‘Circus‘s dish spinning trick’, artist shows the
existing odds of dangerous reality and fantastic performance on circus
stage. Here, the dish hung riskily and attached to the end of window
at the same time which continuously spins.
Saskia was involved in a residence program in North-South part of
Lijiang area, Yunnan, China where experiencing ‘tribe culture’ became
popular tourism package and she realized the state of removing and
imitating culture which happens simultaneously. In the East part of
Lijiang, Nashi sells their traditional house and land to huge city
business capital and move to modern South area, while Chinese from
other modernized city visits East part of Lijiang and wears
traditional custom, experiencing traditional ceremony and imitating
tribes. Those strange images were a part of the research project.
Jasmina Llobet and Luis Fernández Pons worked No One Wins(2010), a
basketball hoop which is too small for standard ball to go through, On
the Road(2010) hanging two helmets on the top of flagpoles in Seoul
Art Space_Geumcheon and ‘table’ which have lost their functions and
cannot be used anymore. The objects commonly call not only their own
identity through figure but also cannot work being cut, purposely
made smaller or placed where it cannot be reached.
Natacha Paganelli’s Love Karaoke designs a space by selecting symbolic
Korean popular culture. Natacha points that Korean shows the different
side (aggressive movement and emotions) in ‘Karaoke’
‘Bang(room)’ culture like ‘Kiss-bang’, ‘Nore-bang’, ‘Jjimjil-bang’ and
etc. is protected from public attentions and gives sense of freedom.
On the other hand, she points that there is an escape from outside
world and ‘formal ritual’ like selecting songs, alcohol, singing a
song in front of others. Natacha’s new work Love Karaoke consists of
familiar video, music, European styled roof of ‘love hotel’ which are
commonly heard and seen in karaoke.
Jeremy D. Slater have lived and worked in huge metropolis like New
York, Tokyo and Seoul and he used exhibit environment and everyday
object as an art work material. Inside/Ouside is an installation and
performance which is inspired by sand paintings of Tibet and the
American Indians and magic circles, deliberately creates a space and
time for audience to meditate in fast pace of huge metropolis
